The years roll away seeing familiar faces, some wear and tear, lots of excited chatter and much dwelling on people and events from ages ago, their relevance of mild importance, yet still a crucial part of this momentary communication. And I am as guilty as the next.

Should We Trust Experts?

With the internet providing an alternative expert base, and many so-called independent authorities having hidden agendas, is it time to ask whether we should trust experts?

When Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile in 1954, he commented, “Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt. Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead.” When experts are wheeled onto chat shows, commenting on the latest celebrity mishap, it is usually harmless psychobabble. When authoritative opinions can put innocent people in prison, or make us question our instinctive abilities, or when experts can lead us to war, then it is definitely time to ask whether we should trust them. The Monarchy is a symbol of national unity. Despite the PR offensive gathering steam, Camilla continues to divide rather than create harmony. In this provocative article, the author questions whether Camilla would make a good Queen.
Some think the Royal Family is little more than a tourist attraction. Others treat their lives like a real life soap opera. While the younger royals might amuse or annoy, the main role of a modern monarch is to unite. The monarchy is a symbol of national unity. A good monarch should not only motivate and lift morale, they should be a person who inspires respect. It follows then that they should set a good example. To be king or queen is not a reward. It is a responsibility and a duty. Despite the continuing PR offensive, can it really be said that Camilla is a unifying force for good? Is she someone who inspires respect?
