Intriguing programme on BBC4 called Dear Diary. Well, the bits I didn“t snooze through. That“s what comes of a 6am wake up call by loud work vibes. Still in jimjams and dressing gown, I was simultaneously shifting more things (to give away), preparing goals, outlining drawings and getting worried about sales and commissions.
Later, that happy little mix had the even less happier addition of software stress. Small wonder my rushed thank you card didn“t turn out as planned.
By some equally unhappy coincidence, one of the items in my Google Reader list was a letter from Oscar Wilde on art being useless… "because its aim is simply to create a mood. It is not meant to instruct, or to influence action in any way. It is superbly sterile, and the note of its pleasure is sterility. If the contemplation of a work of art is followed by activity of any kind, the work is either of a very second-rate order, or the spectator has failed to realise the complete artistic impression."
Still, tired or otherwise, I disagree - in my case. My art very definitely is to instruct - and to influence spiritual activity in some way, but one where the piece creates the link to one“s higher mind. Ambitious, perhaps, but even for me there is a lingering benefit. Often I look at some pieces and wonder if I really painted them.
As for keeping a diary, Richard E Grant is right in that it is companionable. He also hinted (I think. Difficult to confirm as I did nod off a few times.) that more can be gleaned in what is not said.
I certainly don“t write about everything I do or think although I might briefly and in a roundabout way acknowledge some action or thought further down the line. I expect famed diarists were also fairly circuitous in their life journeying.
Now, I must bath and bed as my eyes are struggling to stay open. Let“s hope for a return to forward flow tomorrow.
