Sat 18: Is Matt Taibbi right about Goldman Sachs? Greed is a terrible thing. It creates such disharmony. But to purposely manipulate international finances for personal (ie their corporate) benefit is appalling.
Perhaps my bit of the Almighty thought this was an idea worth following up, as there was a link to Ayn Rand in Google Reader this afternoon.
While I share a birthday with Rand, I do not share her theory of Objectivism.
This is what I wrote in one issue of Floreo News: `The divine sense of humour knows no bounds. I share a birthday with Ayn Rand, advocate of objectivism and a fierce critic of mysticism and religion: “Man - every man - is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others”. She posited that the individual “must exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself. The pursuit of his own rational self-interest and of his own happiness is the highest moral purpose of his life.”“
I do champion the individual. Absolutely. However, the individual is part of the whole and therefore any individual action must consider the ripples upon the whole. Thus her view of self-interest foremost is something I could never agree with.
Besides which, all those industrialists et al still need the `worker ants“ to carry out their grand plans. But, back to the likes of Goldman Sachs and their ilk, they also need people like us to bleed dry.
More esoterically, I believe that without such strong ego energies around, even a sheep mind can turn into a leader.
All this apart, I confess to not remembering anything about her books which I read aeons ago. Maybe there will be bits I have some sympathy with. Unfortunately, I don“t have the time to actually read the books again.
A Rand quote that I can fully agree with: "the role of art in human life is to transform man’s widest metaphysical ideas, by selective reproduction of reality, into a physical form-a work of art-that he can comprehend and to which he can respond emotionally."
Meanwhile, another kind of greed continues to kill caring in me. I was thinking of this again last night. If love does not effect any kind of reciprocal behaviour, while it may be spiritually noble to continue in the same vein, mere humans either learn to hate or to be indifferent. I am veering towards the second. Sadly.
